Yarn yardage estimator

Estimate yards or meters (and skeins) from project size, yarn weight, and fabric density.

Project size

Pick a preset or enter finished width and length in inches.

Lap / sofa throw.

Yarn & fabric

Match the CYC weight on your yarn label. Density adjusts for open lace vs tight single crochet.

Recommended 10–20% for borders and color changes.

Estimate

Yarn needed (with 15% buffer)
~75.9 yd

≈ 75.9 yd / 69.4 m

Skeins to buy
1 skein
Approx. area
3,000 in²

Planning estimate only. Stitch pattern, tension, and yarn brand vary widely—buy an extra skein for large projects when dye lots matter.

Need stitch counts for that size? Use the gauge calculator. Check hook suggestions on the hook & yarn chart.

Running out of yarn mid-blanket is painful; buying three extra skeins of the wrong dye lot is expensive. A yarn yardage calculator turns finished width, length, and Craft Yarn Council weight into a planning estimate before you start.

OpenCrochet uses typical yards-per-square-inch factors for crochet fabric, adjusted for open vs dense stitches, plus an optional buffer for borders and color changes. Enter the length printed on your skein label to see how many balls to buy.

How to estimate crochet yarn yardage

  1. Choose a project preset (scarf, throw, baby blanket…) or enter custom finished width and length in inches.
  2. Select the yarn weight symbol from your label (1 fingering through 7 jumbo).
  3. Set fabric density: open for lace/mesh, average for most patterns, dense for tight single crochet or amigurumi.
  4. Add a buffer (often 10–20%), enter yards or meters per skein, then read the total yarn and skein count.

Tips for buying the right amount of yarn

  • When dye lots matter, buy every skein you might need in one trip—or keep the receipt until the project is finished.
  • Tall stitches and openwork use less yarn than dense single crochet at the same size; density setting accounts for that.
  • Amigurumi is small but dense—prefer the dense setting and still leave a buffer for limbs and color changes.
  • For stitch counts at that size, pair this tool with the gauge calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Is the yarn yardage calculator free?
Yes. It runs in your browser with no account. Use it anytime while planning a project.
Why doesn’t this match my pattern’s yardage?
Patterns measure real swatches and stitch patterns. This tool is a planning average by area and yarn weight. Always prefer the pattern’s requirement when you have one, and treat this estimate as a shopping guide.
Can I use meters instead of yards?
Yes. Switch the display unit and enter skein length in meters if your label uses metric.
Does it work for knitting too?
Factors are tuned for crochet fabric density. Knitting usually uses less yarn for the same area—use crochet estimates only for crochet projects.
